Happy Tuesday! This Tuesday is also April 20, and the date is informally recognized as an international marijuana consumption day, simply known as 420. So for some, this Monday has an especially happy ring. If you are legally (and we stress, legally) partaking in celebrating 420, here are four movies that you might enjoy. Note, we don’t recommend seeing all four in one day, but one or two could be a friendly companion.
“All About Eve” (1950) – Margo Channing (Bette Davis) is a big Broadway star, but pay attention to her loyal understudy Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter), who has twinkly eyes for fame. This slow-moving car crash is the stuff for Oscars. In this case, six gold statues! Also, keep an eye out for a Marilyn Monroe appearance.
“Memento” (2000) – Christopher Nolan’s masterful whodunit starring Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano will have you performing differential equations in order to keep up, as Leonard (Pearce) tries to piece together recent events while coping with a severe handicap. He can’t hold short-term memories….and that’s a problem. A mind-bending trip!
“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” (2016) – Jane Austen films aren’t for everyone, and neither are zombie flicks, but what if someone combined the genres into an insane mashup? Thank you, writer/director Burr Steers. Here, the five Bennett sisters (Lily James, Bella Heathcote, Ellie Bamber, Millie Brady, and Suki Waterhouse) are put to the test, as they partake in dances and tea parties, but the ladies also swing swords to skewer the undead.
“RoboCop” (1987) – Paul Verhoeven’s twisted cops and baddies movie has dystopian, delightful warped edges, and while Peter Weller and Nancy Allen solidly beam altruistic police beacons, Kurtwood Smith as Clarence Boddicker is one of the very best villains from the 1980s. In addition, this highly entertaining action film shows what happens when human beings come in contact with toxic waste. Eeewww.
